Use a template-based Cross-Sell Map

This article is for Crush users whose admin has prepared a Cross-Sell Template, and for the admin who builds that template. Start from Use the Cross-Sell Map if you have not chosen a mode yet.

Relationship Map-only customers do not have Cross-Sell. This page is Crush-only.

When to use a template

Choose From Template when:

  • Rows and columns should stay consistent across plans (same products, same account slices).
  • Cell values should come from Salesforce — opportunities, current spend, or other mapped objects — with filters.
  • Sellers should open and edit the underlying record (for example an Opportunity) from the map.

You cannot add or remove rows and columns after the map is created. If the grid is wrong, fix the template and create a new map, or use freeform.

What the admin sets up

A Cross-Sell Template defines the grid and how each cell is filled.

Rows and columns are generated in one of two ways:

  • From records — the template points at a Salesforce object (for example Product or a child Account) and a label field. Mappings and condition groups filter which records become headers.
  • From picklist values — the template builds headers from a picklist (including dependent picklists) instead of a list of records.

Cell values come from mapped fields on those records. Each amount type can pull a number (for example Opportunity Amount) and apply filters (for example Stage is not Closed). Admins also choose which extra fields appear in the cell panel.

In Org Settings, Can Create Objects In Cross-Sell controls whether users can create a new mapped record from the cell panel. Leave it off if sellers should only edit existing records.

Changes to a template can change the data on existing maps that use it. Create a new template when you need a different grid without disturbing maps already in use.

Create the map

  1. Open the Account Plan.
  2. Open the Cross-Sell section.
  3. Click Create New Cross-Sell Map.
  4. Choose From Template.
  5. Select the Cross-Sell Template.

The map builds the grid and fills cells from current Salesforce data. Refresh the map after records change.

Work a cell

A template cell is a summary, not a blank tile you type into.

  1. Click a cell.
  2. The panel shows the row, the column, any highlight, data types, and notes.
  3. Mapped amount types list the Salesforce records that match this intersection.
  4. Open a record to edit it — including an Opportunity, when the template maps to opportunities. This is the difference from freeform: the cell has a linked record definition.
  5. If your admin enabled create-from-map, add a new record from the panel. It inherits the row and column context the template defined.

Type notes on the cell when the summary needs context. A yellow notes mark appears on the cell when notes exist. Hover the mark to read them.

Colors, highlights, and data types

Both modes support highlights and data types. On a template map they also show on the grid:

  • A highlight tints the cell.
  • A data type option’s color appears as a colored chip in the cell. Freeform maps keep that color in the panel only.

Amount type colors appear on the summary chips for each mapped total.

What you will not see (compared with freeform)

  • Edit Rows & Columns does not appear. The template owns the headers.
  • You do not drop a blank tile into an empty cell. Empty means no mapped records matched that intersection (or the amounts are filtered out).
  • You do not type a free-form currency value as the source of truth. Change the Salesforce record, then refresh.

Filters, formulas, and score

Use the header filter to show or hide highlights, amount types, rows, and columns.

Summary formulas calculate extra row and column totals from the amount types on the map. They are not amount types and do not appear in the amount type filter.

Filled cells feed the Cross-Sell component of the Account Plan Score.

Errors and edges

  • The map is empty. The template’s record filters returned no rows or columns for this account. Check the template mappings, sharing, and that the account has matching records.
  • A cell is blank but I know there is an opportunity. The opportunity does not meet the amount-type filter (stage, product, account), or it is not related to both the row and the column objects the template uses.
  • I cannot add a product row. Expected. Change the template or use a freeform map.
  • I cannot create a record from the cell. Ask an admin to enable Can Create Objects In Cross-Sell and to confirm you have create access on the mapped object.
  • Older template maps still show tiles. Legacy templates render like freeform (tiles, editable headers). New templates use the summary cell layout in this article.
